For every query submitted to the ADS we display an RSS link which is created on the fly based on a user’s cookie and a random query id. So if you repeated the same query twice you would be offered two different RSS feed URLs, even though they would both give equivalent results.

However, once you have obtained a URL for an RSS feed that will remain stable in time, so it’s something you can view/read from different computers and with different applications, whether or not your current browser has an ADS cookie or not. Usually it’s trivial to copy the feed URL from one reader or one computer to another, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Thanks, Kelle. That was a good suggestion, and I’ve now fixed the problem.
As it happens, I was just confused by a browser error. Apparently, shortly after importing the ADS custom query and myADS feeds into my gReader, I made a switch from Safari to Firefox. In Firefox I had the preferences set to a very strict “don’t accept cookies from sites” (Was that the default? Couldn’t be.) Most RSS feeds don’t deal with cookies, because the provider is just posting a single content stream for all users. With ADS queries, of course, the provider has a unique content stream for every user, so it has to plant a cookie in order to keep track of my hand-crafted query results.

With cookie acceptance turned on, now all of my ADS RSS feeds are working.

This raises a question of portability, though. If I’m right about this, then my ADS feeds will only refresh as long as that particular cookie persists. On another machine (or even another browser on the same machine) those RSS feeds will become stale. I think I would have to click through to actually load the RSS feed page outside of gReader, in order to get the cookie on the new machine or new browser.

RSS feeds for a customized ADS query works for me. it’s a query based just on my name…i get a new item in gReader anytime a new entry is added to ADS with my name on it.

Try troubleshooting by subscribing to a very broad query (author=smith). Might as well also try a couple different types of queries and see if any of them update…

Ok, so I’ve been trying to get the ADS feeds working for several weeks now, with no success. The astro-ph feed is excellent (and, incidentally, the “better greader” add-on for Firefox is a handy tool. It allows you to preview the ADS page for any article right inside the greader window, so you can click directly through to get the bibtex entry or a pdf of the paper). However, any time I set up a regular ADS feed, it loads cleanly into greader, but then never updates. Here is what I have tried:

1) entered a query on the ADS search form, got a list of results, and subscribed to it using the RSS link at the bottom of the page
2) set up the weekly notifications in myADS, got a results page, but there is no RSS feed for it.

For now I’m using the weekly e-mail service, which has some nice features, but it would be great to be able to get option (1) working. Has any one had any success getting the RSS feed from a query results page to update in greader?
