How to give a talk
There is lots of advice out there, because it's a pretty fundamental part of the job! When training undergraduates, CUNY Astro takes a layered approach. During a typical research summer, each student will typically give 4 oral presentations:
- 2x 5 minute presentations in the first 5-6 weeks of a 10 week summer program. Students meet weekly and rotate presenting on an APOD of their choice. Feedback comes immediately afterwards from fellow students and faculty.
- mid-summer progress report: 5 minutes of where you are/how it's going (week 5 or 6).
- 10 minute final presentation in week 10 (practice talks are usually also ongoing before this)
Students pick up a lot of basics from this, but still don't necessarily know the ins and outs of a longer talk. Saavik Ford has a 'How to give a talk' talk aimed at developing those skills. Slides are attached but may not make much sense without the actual presentation.
