Macsingularity archive now hosted at Astrobetter

by Planck on April 13, 2010

Thanks to Kelle, despite my leaving astronomy for the glorious world of public policy, and shutting down my web host account, the archives of Macsingularity live on.  We’re not 100% sure what to do with the home page, the IRAF installers (which are out of date), and other things, but for now pretty much all hold content and links to the site should continue to work and visitors to the site will simply notice the change of the title.

Long term, someone out there could step up and learn how to package up the IRAF files for installation.  Though, the email I received on installing IRAF had slowed to a trickle so I just assumed everyone was using scisoft or perhaps the IRAF team had streamlined the official installation process.

Also, someone suggested I put out the source of the IRAF button, which I plan to do at some point soon.  So, thanks again to Kelle for helping me migrate the archives.  Macsingularity is dead, long live Macsingularity.

Thank you for all the work over the years. Your iraf installation was wonderful and I still use the IRAF button.

Yes, thank you! I’ve used your installation guide within the past year and am not a fan of scisoft. I know several other people who’ve done the same.

I want to thank Marcos, too. I have used his installers and other resources for many years.

I just want to point out that there is, hidden away on the STScI Python download page, an installer for Mac Intel users running 10.5 or 10.6. This is advertised as installing IRAF, STSDAS, and STScI Python, but it also installs many other packages, including the Gemini IRAF package and all of the necessary support packages. The page link is http://www.stsci.edu/resources/software_hardware/pyraf/stsci_python/current/download; look for stsci_iraf_intel_2.9.dmg down near the bottom.

The default install location is /usr/stsci, and note that there are a couple of lines you need to add to your .cshrc or .tcshrc file so the installation can be found.

Thanks Alan! I’ve updated the Setup a New Mac wiki entry with this note about IRAF. Feel free to update it yourself in the future as needed.
